How does intimate lubricant work?
Lubricant replaces or complements natural lubrication, which depends on age, hormonal cycle, stress, certain treatments (the pill, antidepressants), or simply the context. The vaginal mucosa produces an average of 1 to 4 ml of fluid during the arousal phase, and the anus produces none, hence the need for an external supplement as soon as there is friction, a toy, or deep penetration.
Concretely, a good lubricant reduces micro-trauma to the mucous membranes, decreases the risk of condom breakage, and makes the sensation smoother. Its formulation focuses on osmolarity, pH (ideally between 3.8 and 4.5 for the vagina), and viscosity—three parameters that condoms and your intimate health will thank you for respecting.
The different types of lubricants
- Water-based: the most versatile formula, washable with water, compatible with latex condoms and all toys, including those made of silicone. Perfect for daily use, it may require reapplication during long sessions.
- Silicone: long-lasting glide, ideal for sex in the shower or for anal play. To be avoided directly on silicone sex toys, which it can degrade over time.
- Hybrid: a mix of water + silicone, a compromise between glide duration and ease of cleaning. A good choice for couples who alternate practices.
- Oil / massage: for sensual touch, but incompatible with latex and fragile mucous membranes. Reserved for external pleasure.
How to choose your lubricant
- According to the practice: an anal dilator gel for first times, a silicone one for duration, a water-based one for daily use.
- According to your sensitivity: favor formulas without glycerin, without parabens, and with a physiological pH if you are prone to yeast infections.
- According to the toys: avoid silicone-on-silicone, otherwise water-based everywhere.
- According to the condom: oil = weakened latex. If using protection, stick to water or silicone.
- According to the desired effect: warming to intensify, delaying to prolong, neutral to let sensations take center stage.
