The menstrual cup collects menstrual flow inside the vagina rather than absorbing it, making it an economical, eco-friendly, and comfortable solution for managing your period on a daily basis.
How does a menstrual cup work?
The menstrual cup is a small, flexible container, usually made of surgical-grade medical silicone, that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. Once in place, it unfolds and creates a light suction against the vaginal walls to form a leak-proof seal. It collects menstrual blood without absorbing it, which preserves the natural balance of the vaginal flora, unlike tampons, which also absorb protective secretions.
It is estimated that a single cup can replace up to 2,000 tampons or pads over its lifespan, resulting in significant savings on your hygiene budget. It can be worn continuously for up to 8 to 12 hours depending on your flow, after which you empty it, rinse it, and reinsert it. At the end of your cycle, sterilization via a microwave sterilizer or a pot of boiling water is enough to fully sanitize it before storage. For those who also wish to take care of their pelvic floor, our selection of pelvic floor training products offers complementary tools.
The different types of menstrual cups
- Standard two-size cup (S/L): the most common format, with size S recommended before childbirth and size L after, to adapt to differences in pelvic floor tone.
- Sport or short cervix cup: with a shorter body and reduced stem, it is suitable for people with a low cervix or who engage in intense physical activity.
- Long stem or ring cup: facilitates removal for beginners or those with a high cervix; the stem can be trimmed gradually according to comfort.
- Set of two cups: some brands like Satisfyer offer sets that include both sizes, which are practical for testing or alternating depending on the days of your cycle.
How to choose the right menstrual cup
- Size according to anatomy: the position of the cervix (low, medium, high) determines the ideal length of the cup; a low cervix requires a short model, a high cervix a more elongated one.
- Capacity according to flow: L-sized cups generally offer 25 to 30 ml compared to 15 to 20 ml for sizes S—essential if your flow is heavy.
- Silicone flexibility: a firm cup opens more easily but can be uncomfortable; a soft cup requires a little practice for insertion but is often better tolerated for daily use.
- Sterilization accessories: a microwave sterilizing bag simplifies maintenance while on the go; consider getting one when you purchase your cup.
- Material certification: ensure the cup is made of certified medical-grade silicone, free from BPA, phthalates, or toxic dyes—an essential safety criterion for prolonged internal use. If you are exploring other intimate hygiene accessories, the same quality standards apply.
