A thermal lubricant does more than just facilitate intercourse: it transforms tactile perception thanks to active ingredients that interact with the body's natural heat or with breath.
Thermal lubricants: how do they work?
The principle relies on active molecules, primarily menthol for the cooling effect and cinnamon or ginger derivatives for the warming effect, which stimulate the skin's thermal receptors without actually changing its temperature. These receptors, called TRPM8 (cold) and TRPV1 (warm), send a nerve signal identical to that of an actual thermal variation, thus creating an intense and localized sensation.
In practical terms, the effect is triggered 30 to 60 seconds after application and can last between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the concentration of active ingredients and the area used. Some formulas combine both effects in the same product, generating a sensory alternation that amplifies the body's response. These products are formulated to respect the vaginal pH (between 3.8 and 4.5) and are generally compatible with sensitive mucous membranes.
The different types of thermal lubricants
- Warming gel: water or silicone-based formula enriched with warming active ingredients like cinnamon, sweet chili, or ginger; ideal for intimate massage and clitoral stimulation.
- Cooling gel: contains menthol or eucalyptol to produce an intense feeling of freshness; particularly appreciated for foreplay and sensitive erogenous zones.
- Hot-cold gel: combines both types of active ingredients in the same formula or as a dual texture; creates a surprising sensory contrast that is highly stimulating for both partners.
- Thermal Brazilian beads: small beads that melt on the skin with the tongue or hands, gradually diffusing a warm, cold, or vibrating effect; perfect for couple's play and lubricants applied in a playful way.
How to choose the right thermal lubricant
- Compatibility with accessories: if you use silicone sex toys, choose a water-based formula to avoid damaging the material.
- Desired intensity: concentrated formulas (labeled "intense" or "hot passion") are suitable for those who are used to them; for a first time, start with a mild or single-dose version to test your tolerance.
- Area of application: some gels are designed for intimate mucous membranes, while others are only for external skin or body massage; always check the recommended use on the packaging.
- Practical format: single doses allow you to test without commitment and are hygienic for travel, while 100 to 200 ml bottles offer better value for money for regular use.
- Ingredients and allergens: read the INCI list if you have reactive skin; avoid formulas with parabens or strong synthetic fragrances if you are prone to irritation.
