Pheromones in perfumes, how do they work?

Pheromones are chemical molecules naturally secreted by the body to communicate biological signals—hormonal status, genetic compatibility, emotional state—to other individuals of the same species. In humans, their role is less direct than in insects, but several studies (notably those from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia) have shown that certain molecules like androstenone or copulin do indeed influence the perception of attractiveness under controlled conditions.

Synthetic pheromone perfumes incorporate these molecules—androstenone (signal of masculine dominance), androstenol (signal of youth), copulin (synthetic female secretions)—into a classic alcoholic or oily base. The active concentration varies from 0.5 to 5 mg per bottle depending on the brand. Effects depend heavily on the social context, individual receptivity, and the partner's HLA genetic compatibility, which explains why two people will not have the same experience with the same product. Combining them with massage oils during an evening enhances the overall effect through physical proximity.

The different types of pheromone perfumes
