The anus does not secrete any lubricating fluid: using a suitable product is therefore not a luxury, it is a condition of safety and comfort for any anal penetration or exploration.
How does anal lubricant work?
The anal mucosa is thinner and less extensible than the vaginal mucosa. It requires a lubricant with high viscosity, often expressed in centipoise (cP), to maintain a durable protective film between tissues. Some formulas incorporate mild muscle-relaxing agents (such as low-dose lidocaine or plant extracts) to facilitate gradual dilation without pain.
A concrete fact: studies on anal practices show that the absence of lubricant triples the risk of mucosal micro-lesions, potential entry points for infections. Quantity also matters; it is recommended to reapply every 10 to 15 minutes during prolonged intercourse or practices such as fisting.
The different types of anal lubricant
- Water-based: lightweight formula, compatible with all silicone anal sex toys and all condoms; absorbs faster, requires regular reapplication.
- Silicone-based: very durable and water-resistant film, ideal for long or aquatic intercourse; incompatible with pure silicone toys.
- Dilator effect: enriched with mild relaxing agents that promote sphincter relaxation; designed for beginners or large-dilation practices.
- Fisting / high viscosity: thick gel texture, large capacity (250 ml to 500 ml), formulated for intense practices requiring maximum slipperiness over time.
How to choose the right anal lubricant
- Material compatibility: always check the base (water or silicone) based on your anal plugs or other toys used.
- Experience level: a beginner will benefit from starting with a mild dilator-effect formula, while an experienced practitioner may opt for a high viscosity without relaxants.
- Format and capacity: 6 ml or 100 ml sizes are suitable for discovery and travel; 250 ml to 500 ml are designed for regular or intense use.
- Ingredients to avoid: avoid formulas containing high concentrations of glycerol (risk of osmotic irritation) or menthol if you have sensitive mucosa.
- Certifications: favor products that comply with ISO 29621 standards or are dermatologically tested, especially if you have reactive skin.
