How does an anal plug work?
An anal plug works thanks to its geometry: a tapered or bulbous head that facilitates insertion, followed by a narrow neck that holds the toy in place, and a flared base or safety ring that prevents it from migrating inside. The anal canal does not have a natural end point like the vagina; a plug without a secure base should never be used. Beginner models from the Pipedream Anal Fantasy range start at approximately 2.5 cm in diameter; large sizes in the same range reach 5 cm and more.
Crystal Gaper dilators (sizes M and L) are used for progressive dilation work: their central tunnel allows for visualization or leaves a passage open, which corresponds to a practice different from simple retention. Armony remote-controlled vibrating plugs add stimulation of the internal pudendal nerve, the branches of which surround the prostatic area in people with a prostate, intensifying the overall sensation.
Different types of anal plugs
- Beginner silicone plugs: flexible and lightweight models from the Pipedream Anal Fantasy range (beginner and intermediate), ideal for a first approach with soft material, a well-defined neck, and a secure flat base.
- Metal and glass plugs: Intense Cristal in stainless steel or borosilicate glass, smooth and non-porous, easily sterilizable. Their weight (often between 100 and 200 g for metal models) produces a feeling of fullness different from silicone.
- Inflatable plugs: the Pipedream Anal Fantasy range offers models with an inflation bulb that allow you to gradually increase the volume after insertion, useful for gentle dilation without changing the toy.
- Remote-controlled vibrating plugs: Armony models with an integrated motor and remote or app, to add a vibratory dimension to retention; often used for discreet wear or during intercourse. Discover more in the Armony selection.
How to choose the right anal plug
- According to experience level: start with a diameter of 2.5 to 3 cm maximum if you are not accustomed to it. Pipedream Anal Fantasy progression kits (3 sizes) allow you to advance at your own pace.
- According to material: medical-grade silicone for flexibility and lightness, metal or glass for the sensation of weight and ease of cleaning. All are non-porous and can be disinfected between uses.
- According to intended use: prolonged wear → choose a well-defined neck and a comfortable base for sitting; prostate stimulation → look for a curved or All Black vibrating plug; couples' play → a remote-controlled model simplifies interaction.
- According to lubricant: the anal canal does not produce any natural lubrication; a lubricant is essential. Use a water-based lubricant with silicone, and a water-based or silicone-based lubricant with metal and glass.
- According to size progression: Crystal Gaper M and L dilators are suited for active dilation practice rather than passive wear. If your goal is to gradually get used to larger sizes, always combine them with slow work and abundant lubrication.
