BDSM, how does it work?

The acronym BDSM encompasses four intertwined practices: Bondage (restraint), Discipline (structure and rules), Dominance/Submission (power exchange), and Sadomasochism (play with intense sensation). Everything is based on informed consent: a framework negotiated in advance, a safe word (often the red/orange/green light system), and the ability to stop at any time.

According to a study by Brock University (Canada, 2022), approximately 22% of adults have engaged in some form of BDSM at least once. To start safely, rely on quick-release equipment (buckles rather than complex knots), and finish with compatible lubricants and a sex toy cleaner after every session.

The different BDSM families

  • Bondage and ropes: wrist restraints, cotton or jute shibari ropes (5 to 10 m), bed-restraint kits with adjustable straps.
  • Impact play: paddles, crops, whips, spankings using leather, faux leather, or silicone depending on the desired intensity.
  • Sensory deprivation: blindfolds, ball gags, hoods; the absence of one sense heightens the others.
  • Chastity and power play: metal or polycarbonate cages, nipple clamps, anal dilators for prolonged control.

How to choose your BDSM equipment

  • By experience level: velvet/neoprene beginner kit to start, genuine leather and metal for advanced practices.
  • By safety: prefer quick-release clips, keep safety shears nearby for ropes.
  • By intensity: flat paddle (diffuse sensation) → crop (targeted impact) → flogger (strong).
  • By area: wrists/ankles to start, buttocks or back with light impact, never on vital organs.
  • By maintenance: leather treated with beeswax, silicone cleaned with soapy water, metal disinfected with isopropyl alcohol.
