How do condoms work?
The male condom is a mechanical barrier made of latex, polyisoprene, or polyurethane that prevents the transmission of STIs (HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, and partially HPV) and pregnancy. When used correctly, its contraceptive effectiveness rate reaches 98% in theory, and about 85% in actual use; the gap is due to errors in application or storage.
Size matters more than you might think: a condom that is too wide will slip, and one that is too tight may break. The nominal width (44 to 64 mm) corresponds to the circumference of the penis divided by 2. Brands like Mister Size offer 3-size test kits to help you identify the right one. Use it with a water-based or silicone-based lubricant (never use oil with latex) to prevent breakage, and also check out our intimate wellness section for complementary hygiene products.
Different types of condoms
- Classic latex: 95% of the market, economical, compatible with water/silicone lubricants, standard sensitivity.
- Latex-free (polyisoprene): for latex allergies, warmer sensation, compatible with all lubricants.
- Specific types (XL, XXL, thin, textured): 60-64 mm sizes, ultra-thin 0.03 mm versions, studded or ribbed for stimulation.
- Dental dams: square of latex for protected oral sex (cunnilingus, anulingus), scented or unscented.
How to choose the right condom
- By size: order a test kit to identify your penile circumference (S 49 mm, M 53 mm, L 57 mm, XL 60 mm, XXL 64 mm).
- By your sensitivity: 0.03 mm for maximum sensation, 0.06 mm for more reassuring protection.
- By allergies: latex-free (Uniq, polyurethane) for sensitive skin.
- By storage: flat, dry, < 25°C; check the expiration date (on average 5 years).
- By format: box of 12 for regular use, box of 100 or 144 to save on volume.
