Delaying ejaculation without losing pleasure is the entire goal of delay gel. Discover how these products work, what forms exist, and how to choose the right formula.
Delay gel: how does it work?
The principle relies on a local desensitizing agent, most commonly lidocaine or benzocaine, two surface anesthetics present in low doses (generally between 2% and 7%). Applied to the glans and frenulum a few minutes before intercourse, the product lowers the sensitivity threshold of the nerve endings, which delays the ejaculatory reflex without blocking the erection or eliminating overall pleasure.
Some formulas instead rely on a cooling or mildly anesthetic effect based on menthol, such as Cobeco's CoolMann Delay or RUF's cooling cream. These plant-based alternatives are often better tolerated by sensitive skin. In any case, absorption time is key: allow 10 to 20 minutes depending on the concentration, and rinse off if you opt for oral sex to ensure your partner's comfort. If you use a condom, apply the gel underneath the condom to avoid transferring the product.
The different types of delay gel
- Lidocaine-based gel: the most common formula, with rapid absorption, dosed for a measurable effect without completely numbing; ideal for beginners.
- Thick delay cream: richer texture, often enriched with moisturizing agents, which penetrates gradually for a gentle and lasting effect; typical reference: Inverma's Men Stop Stop cream.
- Menthol cooling effect gel: an alternative without chemical anesthetics, which acts through mild vasoconstriction and a sensation of freshness, appreciated for its natural profile.
- Delay spray: convenient format and precise dosage per pump, particularly suited to users who wish to finely control the amount applied with each use.
How to choose your delay gel
- Active ingredient concentration: start with a low dose (2-4% lidocaine) to test your sensitivity before increasing the concentration if necessary.
- Texture according to your habits: light gel for fast absorption, cream for prolonged comfort, spray for convenience, which can potentially be paired with compatible lubricants.
- Compatibility with condoms: check that the product is latex-safe if you use protection; some oil-based formulas can weaken latex.
- Sensitivity profile: reactive skin or known allergies to local anesthetics? Opt for menthol or plant-based formulas.
- Format and capacity: a 10 ml tube is suitable for testing, while 40-60 ml sizes offer better value for money for regular use.
