An edible lubricant is primarily a water-based, flavored, and sweetened lubricant formulated to be ingested safely. The golden rule: any formula labeled as edible must contain neither mineral oil nor silicone, two ingredients incompatible with the digestive mucosa and latex condoms. Brands like Cobeco, Waterfeel, and Intt adhere to these standards with controlled glycerin concentrations to limit the risk of irritation for sensitive individuals. Discover other water-based lubricant formulas in our dedicated selection.
Edible lubricant: how does it work?
The aqueous glycerin base creates a slippery film on the mucous membranes without clogging skin pores or altering the vaginal microbiome when used in moderate amounts. Unlike performance lubricants designed for long-duration penetration, edible formulas have a lighter viscosity—approximately 500 to 2,000 cP according to rheological tests—making them less suitable for prolonged anal use, but perfectly effective for oral play and lubricated caresses.
The flavorings used by Waterfeel and Cobeco are certified food-grade, identical to those used in the confectionery industry. The sugar concentration is generally sufficient to mask the natural taste of the lubricant without inducing candidiasis, provided it is not applied in large quantities inside the vagina. In case of vaginal sensitivity, prefer a glycerin-free formula or reserve the product for external and oral stimulation only. To enhance the experience, flavored massage oils are an excellent complement for non-mucosal areas.
The different types of edible lubricants
- Classic fruity flavors: strawberry, cherry, passion fruit—staples in the category, fluid texture, light refreshing effect, ideal for a first discovery.
- Gourmet flavors: candy, caramel, white chocolate—slightly higher viscosity, sweeter scent, popular for creative couples' games.
- CBD / Cannabis formula: water base infused with hemp oil or cannabis terpenes, THC-free, light local relaxing effect according to user feedback, mild herbaceous flavor.
- Travel size (30-50 ml): pocket-sized bottle for weekends or travel, ideal volume for 3 to 5 uses, discreet in carry-on luggage.
How to choose your edible lubricant
- Check the INCI list: ensure the absence of mineral oil, parabens, and harsh preservatives (chlorhexidine) if prone to vaginal imbalances.
- Consider glycerin: individuals prone to yeast infections should choose a glycerin-free or very low-glycerin formula, even among edible products.
- Compatibility with accessories: any water-based lubricant is compatible with silicone, latex, and TPR toys—no risk of material degradation.
- Volume according to use: a 100-175 ml bottle represents approximately 15 to 25 uses; for regular use, the large format is more economical per ml.
- Flavor and intensity: test first on the wrist to evaluate the lasting power of the scent at body temperature before intimate use.
