The dental dam: how does it work?

A dental dam is a flexible sheet of latex, generally rectangular (approximately 15 × 15 cm), that is laid flat over the vulva or anal area before any oral stimulation. It creates a physical barrier that limits the transmission of pathogens such as HSV-2 (genital herpes), HPV, or certain bacteria responsible for STIs. According to WHO data, unprotected cunnilingus and anilingus expose individuals to several sexually transmitted infections, yet less than 5% of people who engage in these practices regularly use appropriate protection.

Glyde dams are made of natural latex approved by the U.S. FDA, which distinguishes them from makeshift plastic wrap often used at home, as the latter offers no guarantee of protection. Their calibrated thickness allows them to transmit heat and pressure while remaining impermeable to microorganisms. They are intended for single use and should not be stretched, as this may weaken the barrier.
